Udaipur is a unique city. Unlike the rest of Rajasthan, which is dominated by huge swathes of deserts, Udaipur is home to numerous lakes. But, tourists mostly visit the city to catch a glimpse of the forts and palaces that exude an air of opulence and elegance. Situated just a few kilometres away from the magnificent city is Sajjangarh Palace, also popularly known as the Monsoon Palace. Perched comfortably atop a hill, the palace is one of the finest examples of Rajasthani culture. The palace, which featured in the James Bond blockbuster, Octopussy, attracts tourists from far and wide.
History
The palace was constructed in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh, who was the seventy second ruler of Mewar. The original purpose of the palace was to act as an astronomical center. However, Sajjan Singh’s death prior to the completion of the palace put a halt to the plans. The construction of the place was completed by Sajjan Singh’s descendants who converted it into a hunting lodge.
The palace is strategically located and offers mesmerising views of the palaces and lakes of Udaipur, which is just five kilometres away. Situated at an impressive height, the palace also provides clear views of the approaching Monsoon clouds thus giving it the sobriquet of Monsoon Palace. The palace is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down.
