If you anticipated another high scoring affair from the WVU offense in the annual Gold-Blue Spring Game, you may have just walked away dissappointed.

On a cold, rainy day in Morgantown the Blue team defense defeated the Gold, 43-34.

While the defense were the eventual talk of the game, that wasn't the case early on. Both offenses led drives down the field for quick scores.

On the opening drive, quarterback Geno Smith hit Stedman Bailey along the sidelines for a 43-yard gain. Just a few plays later, the two connected once again for a 2-yard touchdown.

Not to be outdone, second-string quarterback Paul Millard led the Blue offense down the field for a scoring drive. True freshman wide receiver Jordan Thompson hauled in 3 catches as they offense marched down the field against the first team defense.

In what appeared to be an offensive shootout, the defense took over from there. On back-to-back drives the defenses forced turnovers from their counterparts. Safety Matt Moro picked off a Geno Smith pass, and Thompson fumbled and lost possession. Later in the half, after Millard led the offense down the field, he was intercepted by Broderick Jenkins just before the half.

The defense led at halftime 34-17.

The second half started the way the first half ended. The defense again forced a Millard interception, in what would be their second of the day. The offenses would eventually add touchdown towards the end of the contest, but it was too late to pull off the comeback.
