Is West Virginia close to matching up with a longtime rival again?
MetroNews is reporting the Mountaineers and the Virginia Tech Hokies are close to finalizing an agreement for the two rivals to compete on the hardwood beginning next season. According to MetroNews, the plans are for WVU to host Tech in the 2012-13 season then go to Blacksburg the following year. The games will likely be played in December.
Overall, West Virginia leads the all-time series 46-29
Both schools have been looking to upgrade their out-of-conference schedule for various reasons. The Hokies, who have found themselves out of the NCAA Tournament recently for having a soft non-conference schedule, is looking to upgrade in that area. The 'Eers, who will begin their first season in the Big 12 conference, will add a game many West Virginians will be able to see on the road without traveling to Morgantown.
In March, West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins told MetroNews on the Statewide Sportsline they had just one non-conference game to fill for the upcoming season. He also hinted it would be from a "BCS program."
"We're working on what we think will be a really exciting home game that we're going to be able to play here in Morgantown – hopefully. We're getting close to completing that," Huggins told the show.
